Roots & Wings
Collaboration with Chang Mei Yee
Roots & Wings is an intergenerational programme that connects youths facing mental health challenges with retired seniors through photographic storytelling. Together, both generations embark on a shared journey—learning photography, exchanging perspectives, curating an exhibition, and sharing their stories with the community.
Guided by the logic model, the programme aims to strengthen self-efficacy. Mastering the basics of photography builds confidence, listening to experiences from the seniors offers new coping perspectives, and receiving encouragement from the seniors develops self-belief. The collaborative process empowers youths not only to see the world through new lenses but also to be seen. Through fostering meaningful connections and validating their hopes and fears, Roots & Wings helps the youths gain resilience, broaden their perspectives, and navigate life’s challenges with renewed strength, even beyond the programme.

The persistent belief of hopelessness and a bleak future have been shaken slightly, after having glimpsed the contentment in the seniors.

The seniors benefitted from the programme as well.
I approached this adventurous project with an open mind, and I am amazed by the transformation in skill, perspective, and relationships within just four weeks.
I am inspired by the organizers’ courage to explore new ground and the participants’ dedication despite challenges. But what stands out most is the deep sense of connection and camaraderie we built along the way.
Learning never stops. It is good to [……] have a chance to meet a diversity of people – young and old, with different skillsets, and share experiences. Through this process, we learn from each other. As such, I have benefit much from this R&W programme.
